Blaenau Gwent Radio Group

 

Introduction to our Radio Amateur Group

 

Our founding members Allan Lewis & Chris Taylor first thought about starting the group in 2018, and finally got going in 2019. They started it because there wasn't a club in the county and everyone had to travel outside of Blaenau Gwent.

They didn’t start it to compete with other groups, but to offer Hams within Blaenau Gwent the facilities of a group and local support. 

 

We are a young but growing local group.  Membership is not restricted to Blaenau Gwent residents and we welcome radio enthusiasts from outside the immediate locality.

The group is affiliated to the RSGB. We are an accredited and approved RSGB Examination Centre. To further support local Hams, the group is offering Foundation course training.  In the longer term, we hope to extend the training offer into Intermediate and Full courses.  We aspire to meet and support all the training needs of group members wanting to upgrade to other licences. 

 

We have a diverse range of experience in the group. Some of our members are very experienced, and expert Hams ready to share their enthusiasm and commitment to the hobby with knowledge.  Other members are novices just beginning to learn about this fascinating hobby.  We have members of all ages and radio experience.    
 

The group is inclusive and democratic. Its ethos is that the group is run by the members, for the members. It is not for the group to be dictated to by the committee.

Since its inception the group has gone from strength to strength with membership increasing all the time.

We are currently training new members to pass the RSGB examination to obtain their licenses & become legal, competent users of radio equipment.

“My way of looking at it is that the group provides a means to put back into the hobby that we are so passionate about.  As newbies we received support from the more experienced as we learned & we want to now give others that same level of support.

As Hams, we never stop learning.  The group provides a forum for sharing knowledge and experience.”
